KUCHING: Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd offers various environmentally-related activities for schools in Kuching City as part of its long-term programme to raise the awareness level among the younger generation about solid waste management, environmental protection and sustainability. One of the activities is the Amazing Green Race which was recently held at SM Sains Kuching (SAINSKU). The activity aims to inculcate the habit and practice of separating solid waste at point of generation amongst the school students and promote the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) concept in a fun way.
SM Sains Kuching (SAINSKU) has been an active partner in the Solid Waste Segregation Awareness Programme, a joint collaboration by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd to promote best practices in recycling in both primary and secondary schools. The first secondary school to join the programme in 2014 and with a population of about 680 students, the school since then have successfully collected over 500kg of recyclables.
“It is important to ensure that the environmental awareness among students continue to strengthen in line with their academic achievements,” said Trienekens Group General Manager for Business Development, Elvin Wee. “Through this fun learning activity, we hope that the students will learn to appreciate the importance of preserving our natural resources and keeping the environment clean by managing our daily waste responsibly and properly.”
Prior to the activity, Trienekens had earlier given an awareness talk at the school as part of its Wise Up to Waste program, focusing on the importance of environmental protection and the Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS).
The race which took place at the school’s compound, saw ten groups competing against each other with a mission to complete several tasks related to the environment and recycling. Team Al-Fateh emerged as the top winner having to complete all the tasks in the fastest time while Team Sophisticated and Team PPG came out second and third place respectively. All winners took home prize hampers and medals.
Present to hand over the prizes to the students were MPP Public Health and Services Senior Officer, Segar Kallang, SAINSKU’s Senior Assistant (Co-Curriculum), Ustaz Majid bin Ismail, Trienekens Department Manager (CSR) Janet J. Balong and Communication Executive, Anthea Lee.
