SK Matang Jaya Set Best Recycling Practice
Kuching – SK Matang Jaya stood out as an outstanding example for setting best recycling practices in school since it was introduced six years ago as part of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. on-going joint solid waste segregation education and awareness programme for schools. The annual programme was concluded with a prize giving ceremony graced by MPP Deputy Chairman Cr. Dato’ Ahmad Dato’ Sri Ibrahim.

In his speech, Dato Ahmad explained that waste management continues to be an important agenda in the council’s meetings and it will carry on to raising awareness about the issue.
“Due to the growing population and economic growth, the general waste volumes also escalate in tandem. We need to continuously look into the ways how we can achieve a satisfactory level of cleanliness including higher recycling rate,” said Dato’ Ahmad. “Attitudes and habits need to change starting from young and our children must be encouraged to start recycling at home and schools. I urge all parents and residents to be actively involved in any cleanliness and recycling programmes in their neighbourhood so we can mutually benefit from clean and healthy environment.”
Trienekens’ Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stephen Chin said that this year the school has successfully collected about 2,850kg of recyclables comprising of used paper, mixed plastics and aluminiums which is an increase of about 9% compared to the previous year.
“This volume can be best translated as meaningful efforts to conserve our precious natural resources and protect our environment from waste pollutions,” said Chin “Raising awareness on proper management of solid waste is something that we take seriously. We are pleased to have worked together with the Council and the school, which has demonstrated an exemplary commitment in making recycling part of their learning process,” added Chin.
The joint programme was introduced to educate students about the 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) concept and best practices in solid waste management. SK Matang Jaya is one of several schools under the Council’s jurisdiction to participate in Trienekens’ recycling programme. It engages both students and teachers to practice segregating their school waste from the point-of-generation.

In addition to the waste separation practices, Trienekens also organised scheduled collection services supplemented with additional environment-themed educational activities such as awareness talk, Amazing Green Race game, inter-class most collected recyclables contest, colouring, poster design and eco-fashion competitions as well as other green initiatives for the school.

At the event, Deputy Chairman Dato’ Ahmad and Chin handed over some prizes to contest winners. Present as well were Headmistress Hajjah Laela Binti Asenan and MPP councillors as well as senior officers from MPP and Trienekens.
