Kuching – Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd recently concluded this year’s joint Solid Waste Segregation and Recycling Education Programme on a high note with a combined prize-giving ceremony held at SM Sains Kuching. The event celebrated key milestones in environmental education and showcased the enthusiastic involvement of students from schools within MPP’s jurisdiction.
MPP’s Public Health, Environment & Municipal Services Chairman, Cr. Prof. Madya Dr. Sopian Bin Bujang, who graced the event, emphasized that environmental education is a cornerstone of the Council’s agenda to promote awareness and foster sustainable practices within the community in the Padawan area.
“Education is a key catalyst for long-term change, and by integrating environmental awareness into the school curriculum and daily activities through a programme like this, we are building a future where sustainability becomes a way of life for everyone,” said Cr. Dr. Sopian.
Trienekens Group CEO, Stephen Chin, represented by Chief Operating Officer, Alice Lee, also emphasized the significance of the joint initiative, “This programme is not only about educating our children about best waste management practices —it is also about cultivating a culture of environmental stewardship. By working together, we are empowering young leaders to shape a cleaner, greener future for our community.”
The six-month programme engaged students and teachers through a series of educational and interactive activities, including the ‘Wise Up to Waste’ environmental awareness talk, a colouring contest, the inter-class recyclable collection competition, the ‘Make Me New’ textile upcycling competition, the ‘Amazing Green Race’ game, and the Sustainable
Environmental Video competition.
Each activity was designed to instil a sense of environmental responsibility and creativity in managing waste sustainably. The textile upcycling competition, for example, calls for contestants to transform discarded textiles into new products, such as tote bags, which can add value to our daily lives and promote sustainability as well as responsible consumption.
The event celebrated the winners of various competitions, with students from participating schools taking home exciting prizes and certificates. The participating schools included SK Matang Jaya, SK Taba Sait, SJK Chung Hua Pangkalan Batu, SK St. Francis Xavier, SK Garland, SJK (C) Chung Hua Stapok, SJK Chung Hua Batu 4½, SK St. Augustine Mambong, SM Sains Kuching, and SMK Matang Hilir.
