KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg received a courtesy call by a delegation from Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia, here recently. The delegation was led by Trienekens’ Group CEO, Stephen Chin (詹運傑) accompanied by the company’s Group Deputy CEO, Elvin Wee; Division Manager for Environment R&D, Dayang Sherrynazra bt Awang Sharkawi and Corporate Communications Division Manager, Julan Yu Abit.

The visit was to brief the Chief Minister in regards to the company’s 20th Anniversary gala dinner, which he had earlier accepted to be the Guest-of-Honour at the celebration. The event is slated to be held in August at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

2019 marks Trienekens’ twentieth year as the leading environmental and waste management company in Sarawak. Besides the corporate gala dinner, the company will be commemorating the occasion with a number of educational and promotional events throughout the rest of 2019 including various Inter-Schools competitions, a corporate seminar, as well as several events for its employees and contractors.

Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd is the operating company of Malaysia’s first Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) for the country’s largest State, Sarawak. This holistic waste management system effectively addresses the ever-growing complexities of handling large volumes of mixed waste in a combination of several technologies in one installation.

In the 1990s, the Sarawak Government had the foresight to recognize that the exponential socio-economic growth along with Sarawak’s progressive development plans would soon necessitate the need for a much more technologically advanced and integrated waste management system than what was then in place. Subsequently in 1998, a Joint Venture Agreement between the Sarawak Government with international waste management expert Trienekens GmbH of Germany led to the formation of Sarawak Wastes Management Sdn Bhd (SWM), with Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd being appointed the following year as the operator to develop, implement and operate Sarawak’s Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS).

Speaking on Trienekens’ two decades of innovation and growth in the State, Group CEO, Stephen Chin (詹運傑) said, “It is heartening to see how Trienekens (Sarawak) has developed and progressed over the years; starting as a municipal waste collector to being a full-fledged service provider offering comprehensive environmental management solutions with modern waste treatment and disposal facilities. That we successfully revolutionized the management of household waste in Sarawak, and provided effective solutions for the oil and gas; as well as other industries’ hazardous waste needs is indeed a great achievement.

In the coming decades, Sarawak’s infrastructure will fundamentally change and with that more than ever; an effective, environmentally efficient, socially acceptable and economically affordable waste management system will be vital to the State’s development. Trienekens is committed to providing all these in parallel while growing our team of local Sarawakian experts, with the vision that eventually, effective waste treatment and prevention approaches coupled with widespread environmental awareness and education will develop a truly sustainable Sarawak.”

Within Sarawak, Trienekens provides residential, commercial, municipal and industrial waste management services for areas under the jurisdictions of the three local Kuching City Councils i.e. Commission of the City of Kuching North, Kuching South City Council and Padawan Municipal Council, as well as part of the Serian District Council. The Company also provides comprehensive services for hazardous waste throughout East Malaysia (Sarawak, Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan).

Trienekens also manages and operates the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) – an integrated facility for the treatment and disposal of municipal and hazardous waste. Sitting on a 112 hectare site, components of the Park include a Level IV Sanitary Landfill, a Secure Landfill, a Leachate Wastewater Treatment Plant, two Hazardous Waste Incineration Plants, and a full-service laboratory, among others.

On the company’s way forward, Chin explained, “The main objective of any modern waste management system is to protect the public and the environment from the potential harmful effects of waste. While proper waste management can ensure that waste is taken care of in a manner which eliminates all adverse impacts (especially the negative effects on the atmosphere and ground water); every individual, business or organization must make conscientious decisions and take responsibility regarding the management of their waste.”

He added, “We will continue to work closely with the relevant stakeholders such as government agencies and private sectors to ensure continued compliancy, and to facilitate the development of waste management, reduction, recycling and recovery programmes.  The company has ventured into new green technologies over the past years, most recent of which is the oil distillation plant which is currently in commissioning stage.”
