MPP, Trienekens Launch Kerbside Recycling Collection at Jalan Semaba

KUCHING: Residents of Jalan Semaba will be the first to benefit from Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd’s pilot project to provide kerbside recycling collection service. The trial house-to-house collection service means residents will be able to recycle their household waste at source with ease and enjoy a scheduled collection service right at their doorstep.

Recycling has always been one of MPP’s main agenda and on-going council programmes are carried out to raise better awareness about its importance and how it can contribute towards waste reduction and environmental conservation. Chairman YB Ir. Cr. Lo Khere Chiang explains: “This project provides the service facility for residents to have their recyclables collected from their kerbside. Its main goal is also to increase the current household recycling rate while laying the foundation for better awareness and setting best recycling practices starting at home.”

 “Recycling at source will definitely be a great opportunity for all to reduce waste and divert them from going to the landfill. We hope residents understand the need to do waste segregation at source and will find it easier to recycle given the collection facility and over time, the practice will become a way of life in their everyday routine.” 

The six-month pilot project will involve several households at the Jalan Semaba area (Lorong 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13). Together with Trienekens, the Council will distribute educational leaflets and special recycling stickers at these areas two weeks prior to the first collection day. Residents are requested to separate their household waste and pack their recyclables in used plastic bags or boxes, marked with the stickers to indicate that the contents are for collection. The packed recyclables are then to be left outside the residents’ houses ready for collection.

Households are also advised to ensure they put their recyclables out early on their collection day, but to refrain from putting it out the day before. The first house-to-house kerbside collection for Jalan Semaba is targeted to be carried out on 3 January 2019.

Trienekens Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Stephen Chin added, “We need to look at the entire waste management system from generating less waste, to better standardised recycling system. At Trienekens, we are always keen to look for effective and innovative solutions for our customers and the public, going beyond the standard municipal collection services to create a positive impact for the community and environment.” 

YB Cr. Lo thanked the Jalan Semaba Community Association for their support and cooperation in the project and added that the project will provide a good opportunity to gauge the community’s environmental awareness level and responsiveness towards the service.

“If the first phase of pilot project goes well, we hope to branch out and include other locations in the project. Some of the possible areas we are looking at are RPR Batu Kawa and Bengoh Resettlement Scheme,” he concluded.

Recyclables that will be collected are household e-waste, aluminium, plastic, steel, paper and cardboard. Normal household waste disposed off in green bins will continue to be collected twice-weekly, according to the housing estates’ regular schedule.
