SWM Signs Concession Agreement With Serian District Council

KUCHING: Sarawak is presently the only state in Malaysia with an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) in place, which allows for the management of both municipal and hazardous waste in a holistic and integrated manner. The 25-year concession is held by Sarawak Wastes Management Sdn Bhd (SWM); a joint venture company formed by the Sarawak State Government and Trienekens GmbH of Germany with Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd as the system’s appointed operator.

IT’S OFFICIAL… SWM Director, Jurgen Pickenhagen and Serian District Council (SDC) Chairman, Lim Hock Meng (2nd and 5th left) exchange documents witnessed by (from left) SWM Director, Tan Show Boon; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Bakrie Zaini; SDC Secretary Joseph Indi; and SDC Deputy Chairman, Dr Simon Sinang Bada.

Following the upgrade of Serian District to Sarawak’s 12th Division, SWM recently inked a concession agreement with the Serian District Council to address the provision of waste management services of areas affected by boundary changes in the neighbouring Padawan Municipal Council (PMC).

In particular, the areas Siburan, Tapah and Beratok, which were previously under PMC had been shifted to the jurisdiction of the Serian District Council. To avoid uninterrupted waste management services for the three areas, the Serian District Council had engaged SWM to continue providing waste management, including disposal services, to the affected areas.

A signing ceremony of the Concession Agreement was recently held in SWM’s headquarters in Jalan Sungai Tapang between the Serian District Council and SWM, who were represented by Council Chairman, Lim Hock Meng and SWM Director, Jurgen Pickenhagen. Also present were Bakrie Zaini, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Local Government; Council Deputy Chairman, Dr Simon Sinang Bada; Council Secretary, Joseph Indi and SWM Director, Tan Show Boon as well as other senior officers and councillors. The council representatives were later taken on a familiarisation tour of the disposal and treatment facilities at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park in Mambong.

Council Chairman, Lim Hock Meng expressed confidence that the IWMS operating company would continue to render services of the highest standards to the local residents, “Considering Trienekens’ proven expertise, experience, track record and commitment in the State; we are happy to have them continue their service in Siburan, Tapah and Beratok,” he said. He added that the council would also consider extending Trienekens’ services in other areas in Serian.
