Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd, the operating company of the Integrated Waste Management System (ISWMS) in Sarawak, recently won the Chief Minister’s Environmental Award (CMEA) 2010. Trienekens’ Executive Chairman, Jurgen Pickenhagen was present to receive the award from Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan who represented Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at the award presentation dinner held at the BCCK last week

Trienekens Sarawak is a Kuching-based environmental management company specializing in the management of solid and scheduled waste. The 300-strong, company was first established in 1999 when it implemented the ISWMS, a modern waste management system developed through a joint venture between the Sarawak State Government and Trienekens GmbH. ISWMS is a holistic waste management system that integrates the collection, transportation and disposal waste, using modern approaches to eliminate all adverse impacts arising from waste disposal and treatment processes.

“We are deeply honoured by this prestigious award,” said Trienekens Executive Chairman, Mr. Jurgen Pickenhagen. “It’s an honorary achievement that highlights our company’s strong commitment and on-going dedication to contribute towards a clean and healthy Sarawak for the people of Sarawak. We are sincerely grateful to the State Government for recognizing our efforts.”

Trienekens Sarawak also manages the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) located in Mambong, the one and only integrated waste management facility that treats and disposes of both municipal and scheduled waste using environmental engineering methods that prevents environmental degradation or contamination possibly arising from disposal processes.

The facility is equipped with a Level 4 sanitary landfill, the only one of its kind out of the other sanitary landfills in Sarawak. The heart of the facility’s operation is the leachate water treatment plant designed to clean and treat toxic leachate water up to Standard B of the Environmental Quality Act (EQA) for safe and clean discharge. The KIWMP also caters for the treatment disposal of scheduled waste with the establishment of its solidification plant, secure landfill and scheduled waste incinerator with each component complying with existing environmental legislation, regulations and policies.

The Mambong sanitary landfills are also equipped with a methane gas extraction system developed to minimize the release and impact of greenhouse gases to the environment. The system provides an opportunity for the company to recover and reuse methane gas as possible renewable energy for the facility in the future.

Trienekens places great importance not only on the environmental but also on other health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects of its operations. This is embedded in the company’s vision and mission to create a safe work culture for its employees which also demands all employees deliver quality services to the public and customers at all times. The company also enforces a stringent environmental monitoring system on its entire operational framework to ensure that all processes do not impact the environment in an adverse manner.

Consistent with its business operations, Trienekens has also been actively promoting better environmental awareness and education amongst the school children and public through its “Wise Up to Waste” awareness programme. The programme educates the younger generation on the importance of cleanliness and proper management of waste. At the same time, reminding them of their role as waste generators and how their behaviors can impact the earth and its environment. Children are encouraged to make cleanliness a big part of their lives and the same time, adopting green practices such as the 3Rs principles as a wholesome effort to sustain the earth’s natural resources.

“Keeping the city clean and disposing of wastes safely at the same time is no easy task. Undeniably, we cannot work alone,” added Mr. Pickenhagen. “Issues on cleanliness and environmental preservation are matters of great concern to us and they are things that we and the community have to continue working together on as partners.

“With this award, we are encouraged to work closer with all the relevant agencies and members of the community to deliver better and higher standards of waste management services. Together, we can invest in a greener and cleaner future for Sarawak,” concluded Mr. Pickenhagen.
