Proper Packing Solutions for Scheduled Waste

WISER TO WASTE... Participants of the seminar with the event organisers and invited speakers.

Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. recently organised its annual scheduled waste management seminar, themed this year as “Proper Packing Solutions for Scheduled Waste”, which was attended by some 25 participants from various agencies. Held at a leading hotel in Labuan, the half-day seminar was aimed at assisting scheduled waste generators, especially those from the oil and gas industry – to better understand issues in the management of scheduled waste according to the prescribed laws and regulations.

Trienekens’ Department Manager of Business Development for Scheduled Waste, Gary Speldewinde, who was also the organising chairperson of the seminar, said that the primary objective of modern waste management is to protect the public and the environment from potentially harmful effects of waste. He reminded participants how in Malaysia without exception, companies are required by law to inform the authorities on the types and quantities of scheduled waste they generate and the associated collection, storage and processing methods used.

Trienekens’ Department Manager of Business Development for Scheduled Waste, Gary Speldewinde delivered the key note presentation.

Speldewinde added, “When hazardous materials are mismanaged, they have the potential to pollute the environment and threaten human health. Because both waste generators and Trienekens’ handle hazardous waste on a day-to-day basis, it is essential that the governing rules and regulations concerning such waste is adhered to.”

Invited speaker Norina Frederick Sambang, Director of the Department of Environment (Labuan), provided participants with an insight into compliancy to the New Environmental Quality Act 1974 and arising issues on management of scheduled & hazardous waste in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Noor Jahan Majeed of Sabah Shell Petroleum Ltd. gave a presentation on the efficient waste management practices of Shell. Gary Speldewinde delivered the key note presentation “Proper Packing Solutions for Scheduled Waste”.

The event was officiated by Elvin Wee, Trienekens’ Senior Manager of Business Development. In his opening address, he thanked the organising committee for their efforts and expressed hope that the seminar would successfully create a common platform for scheduled waste generators and the regulating bodies to share their knowledge, views, experiences and best practices in the field of scheduled waste management and environmental sustainability. He expressed his hope that the seminar had hopefully assisted all present in better understanding the importance of scheduled waste packaging and the consequences of non-compliance.
