Kuching – About 70 PALS Club members from various primary and secondary schools in Kuching Division recently took part in an environmental education workshop jointly organised by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) of Sarawak, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. and the Sarawak Museum Department, last weekend at the Sarawak Museum. The event was aimed at promoting environmental awareness and heritage appreciation amongst the school students.

GREAT CLUB...NREB’s Senior Assistant Controller of Environmental Education and Publicity, Mr. Paul Ponar Sinjeng giving a short speech.

Themed as “Protecting Nature & Preserving Heritage”, the day’s event was packed with exciting activities ranging from environmental talks, treasure hunt and games. PALS (Persatuan Alam Sekitar) Club is an environmental club established by NREB for all primary and secondary schools throughout Sarawak. The PALS Workshop was the first programme organized at the divisional level in collaboration with Trienekens and Sarawak Museum.

According to NREB’s Senior Assistant Controller of Environment Education and Publicity, Mr. Paul Ponar Sinjeng, the joint programme benefits the students as it equips them with the information and knowledge essential for developing good behaviour and attitude towards environmental conservation.

“Inculcating good environmental habits from a young age is important as it helps to initiate an effective environmental management in the state. Today’s workshop provides an excellent opportunity for our younger generation to learn that.” said Mr. Paul. “The club’s activities are linked with the school’s curriculum subjects such as science and environment. I certainly encourage all schools to enroll and register themselves with the club.”

Trienekens’ Public Relations Manager Ms. Julan Abit also added that the three agencies, as organizing partners, intended for the workshop to strengthen the current environmental awareness amongst the students and simultaneously, provide an opportunity for them to learn from history on how past experiences can help shape the future, particularly the importance of protecting the environment through good and sustainable practices and use of natural resources.

At the workshop, NREB and Trienekens presented a short talk on ways to protect the environment from home and schools as well as understanding the solid waste management processes respectively, while staff of the Sarawak Museum led the students on a tour to both the Old Museum and Dewan Tun Razak. During the tour, students were engaged in an exciting learning experience via quiz and riddle games on the vanishing traditional lifestyle, cultures and beliefs of the indigenous groups in Sarawak. In the later part of the programme, the students had fun exploring the museum grounds by taking part in the Amazing Green Race, a task-oriented game which exposed the students to different activities of preserving the natural resources and managing of waste effectively.
