11/10/2011
Kuching: Some 35 staff of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. recently attended a three day Evacuation Training and Drill Exercise at the company’s Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park in Mambong. The annual affair was organized by Trienekens’ Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Division and conducted by the Malaysian Fire Department (BOMBA).
In accordance with the company’s HSE policies, fire risk assessments are carried out by dedicated personnel on a regular basis. Besides an enacted fire management plan, the fire risk assessment includes identification of fire hazards, the persons at risk from fire and ways in which to minimize such risks.
To further cultivate a “safety as priority” mindset amongst participants, the training was made more relevant through citing of easy application at both work and home. This included a fire safety session aimed at educating the participants on the importance of fire safety, guiding them on simple and easy-to-remember techniques to escape and save their lives, and others, from possible fire tragedies.
Participants were taught the characteristics of fire, how to use fire extinguishers, how to escape from a burning building and more. Attendees also had a glimpse into the life of a fire-fighter as part of their training involved typical BOMBA exercises, including activities such as running while carrying fire hoses, and assembling lengthy fire hoses in teams.
On the final day of the training, an evacuation drill was carried out under the observation of BOMBA trainer, Pegawai Bomba Iskandar bin Aus. Emergency response teams and individuals were put to a test when they were made to safely remove “injured” persons to designated emergency assembly points using items such as stretches, fire hoses and hydrants. Officiating the event was Trienekens’ Division Manager of HSE, Harris Michael.
