Trienekens Organizes Seminar on Scheduled & Hazardous Waste Management for SMIs in Bintulu

Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., the operating company of the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWMS) in Sarawak, organised a special seminar on management of scheduled and hazardous waste on 12 March 2009 at the Park City Everly Hotel, Bintulu.
Themed as “Efficient Solutions for Scheduled Wastes Management”, the half day seminar topics touched on various issues which focus on environmental awareness and equipping the participants with the necessary understanding and knowledge of managing various types of scheduled and hazardous waste from generated by the small and medium industry.
The invited speakers at the seminar were from the Department of Environment, Sarawak and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA).

According to Trienekens’ Managing Director, Mr. Gerhard Aulbert, the seminar offered an opportunity for small and medium industries in Bintulu to gain first-hand information on management of scheduled and hazardous waste which is in accordance to the current environmental laws and regulations; as well as the safety and health aspects in managing such waste.
“We hope that with this seminar, scheduled waste generators will be presented with effective opportunities and solutions in managing their waste; and with the increased knowledge, it can contribute not only to safer and cleaner management of their business operations but it will also pave ways to healthier environment and the quality of life for the communities,” said Aulbert.
This is the second time such a seminar has been organized in Bintulu by the operator of the Integrated Solid Wastes Management (ISWMS) in Sarawak. The last one was held in 2006.
With long term development planned for industrial activities in Bintulu, especially with the development of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) in the Sarawak, the range and volume of wastes that will be considered as hazardous is expected to increase during this period. Waste generators need to be equipped with the appropriate knowledge and adopt a safer, regulated method of handling, storing and disposing of their waste while maintaining the safety and sustainability of the environment.
Participants had the opportunity to learn from the invited speakers about the available services provided to cater for their scheduled wastes management, understand the present and future developments outlined for the relevant development authorities to ensure that environmental sustainability goes hand in hand with the State’s progress as well as the existing environmental regulations in place to ensure that the risks of environmental degradation arising from such rapid activities are controlled and mitigated in the most effective manner.

The seminar was attended by 120 participants comprising from business owners and managers, facility managers and personnel, engineers, environmental professionals, compliance specialists, government officials, transporters and others who work with hazardous waste, mainly those from wood and timber-based, oil and gas, oil palm, transportation companies, and workshops in and around Bintulu.
