Sharing of Knowledge on Modern Waste Management

Kuching – A group of about 30 participants of the Natural Resources and Environmental Management Conference (NREM) 2005 visited the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park recently. The visit was part of the 3-day conference activities organised by the Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and Sarawak Development Institute (SDI).

During the visit, the participants were introduced to the various operating units at the waste management facility, which is the only kind in the South East Asia region. The facility comprised of four key operating units which are the sanitary landfill, secure landfill, leachate water treatment plant and an incineration plant.

In the briefing session, they learned about the Integrated Solid Waste Management System (ISWMS) practiced by the state and the waste collection, transportation treatment and disposal services provided by Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd.

They were also introduced to the sophisticated environmental management and engineering methods implemented by by Trienekens at the KIWMP which strictly complies with the environmental standards set by both the local and international bodies. The facility’s key operating objective is to ensure that all wastes are treated and disposed of in the proper manner without causing adverse impacts to the environment, particularly the valuable underground water resources.

“We are proud that such a modern waste management facility exists in the state. We are also pleased to have visited park as now we have learned about the technology used in managing our waste,” said Dr. John Chan of IKM, who led the visiting group.

“The facility is unique and its level of standard is trend-setting for the country. Hopefully, all the other waste management facilities will soon follow suit,” he added.

The Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) sits on 112 hectares land located about 23 km from the Kuching City. The facility commenced operations since April 2004 and has the capacity of handling more than 200,000 tons of municipal, hazardous and scheduled waste per annum.
