Tuesday, 04/04/2006, Bintulu

HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS WASTE...One of the seminar participants engaging in the question-and-answer session at the half-day seminar.

Presently, a lot has been said about the way hazardous waste are being managed in the country and how the mismanagement of these waste can lead to detrimental affects to both the environment and the health of the general public.

Depending on the origin, there are many types of hazardous waste which require different types of treatment and stabilization process before they can be properly disposed of in safe manner. The current take on proper disposal of toxic waste, is however still less satisfactory as the awareness and knowledge on proper management of such waste is still considered low especially in the small and medium industries.

Realizing this gap, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., the waste management company and operator of the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWMS) organised a half-day seminar titled “The Management of Scheduled and Hazardous for Small and Medium Industries” in Bintulu on 4 April 2006. The seminar aimed to raise the awareness and impart knowledge on compliant management of scheduled and hazardous waste to the companies.

Aside from sharing Trienekens’ own experience in managing hazardous waste, key experts from the relevant government agencies such as the Department of Environment (DOE) and Bintulu Department Authority (BDA) presented the participants with the latest information, experiences and especially legislation on how to manage their scheduled waste in accordance to the existing laws.

“This is an ideal opportunity for small and medium industries such as wood and timber-based, oil and gas, oil palm and transportation companies and workshops in Bintulu to gain first-hand information on management of scheduled and hazardous waste which is in accordance to the current environmental laws and regulations; as well as the safety and health aspects in managing such waste,” commented YB Dr James Dawos Mamit, the Environmental Advisor to the State Government.

About 60 companies from the small and medium industry including several major oil and gas companies attended the seminar.
