TREATED LEACHATE...Mr. Joerg Domroes, the Managing Director of Trienekens, explaining the stages of leachate water treatment process and showing to the media samples of treated leachate water.

About 20 media members from both the local and national media organizations joined in the Media Familiarisation Tour organized by Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. last Monday at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP), Mambong.

The objective of the tour was to introduce the role and functions of the integrated waste management park to the media, which is considered as the most modern and advanced waste management facility in the reqion. The standard set by the KIWMP meets or even exceeds the both local and international environmental standards.

The media tour began with a short briefing by the Managing Director of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., Mr. Joerg Domroes.

“We are pleased to share with the media tour today the current status of our operations since the facility opened in 2004. The facility has experienced rapid changes and it has fully implemented its full capacity as an effective and integrated waste management park, catering for the waste generated by city folks as well as the industries,” Mr. Domroes said.

“Most importantly, we would like to emphasize to the media that the key operating principle of the facility is to ensure that all in-coming wastes are managed, treated and disposed of in accordance with the existing laws on environmental management.

“With professional planning, design, construction, management and operations, landfills are still safe, functional and remain an integral part of any good waste management system, and it will not, at all threaten the well- being of the environment,” stressed Mr. Domroes.

The media group later went on a site tour which brought them to witness firsthand the main components of the KIWMP which are the sanitary landfill, the leachate water treatment plant, the secure landfill and the incineration plant.

Throughout the tour, the group learnt about the various stringent waste management and treatment processes implemented in each component. The group was also shown some samples of processed leachate water which ultimately has to be released into the external water channels in strict conformance to Standard B of the EQA 1974.

Also present at the tour were YB Dr James Dawos Mamit who is the Environmental Advisor to the State Government and Mr. Jurgen Pickenhagen, Chairman of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd..
