Trienekens carried out its first joint emergency drill exercise with external safety and rescue parties at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park in Mambong last Friday. The purposes of the drill were to evaluate the facility’s emergency response plan and preparedness in managing fire or emergency incidents on-site and to heighten the level of safety awareness, knowledge and practices amongst the operations staff.
The drill started off at about 9am by an explosion followed by thick smoke and fire at the leachate water treatment plant. The site site’s emergency response team (ERT) quickly mobilized their equipments and personnel for rescue operation. The nearest BOMBA (Siburan) was alerted and the unit reached the facility in 15 minutes followed by teams from RESCUE 999 and the Police Department.
Part of the emergency plan outlined the provision of medical care for victims and measures to mitigate environmental impacts resulting from such incidents such as spillage of pollutants to the natural environment.

“Our mission during the training is to ensure that any possible form of contamination is contained in the most stringent manner possible to maintain public health and safety as well as pollution control,” said Trienekens Managing Director, Gerhard Aulbert. Present to assess the performance were officials from the Department of Environment and Department of Safety and Health.

The final outcome of the drill was jointly assessed and reviewed by both the Company and external agencies through a post-mortem discussion. The joint emergency drill is planned to be an annual health, safety and environment programme for Trienekens to maintain the level of emergency preparedness and good condition of safety equipments in order to meet expectations in dealing with such incidents at the site in the future. Prior to the joint drill, the company has carried out several internal training exercises which address emergency situation involving fire breakout, accidents and hazardous waste spillage (HAZMAT Training).
