Young people are important instrument of change. Learning to manage waste from an early age is essential as children develop their personalities and habits based on their observations. These can be learned from school or at homes, where they are most likely to copy the actions’ of their peers, parents and siblings.
Hence, the waste management company embarked on the educational programme launched in August last year. The programme aims at educating the younger generation about waste management and introduces positive habits in dealing with every day waste.
The “Wise Up to Waste” programme was designed to fit every age level and to date, Trienekens has carried out the programme at pre-school centres, primary as well as secondary schools.

CREATIVE MIND: School children making art out of recyclable items, guided by Trienekens’ Logistics Supervisor, Mr. Halix Kuyong.
It focuses on issues such as the waste management process; including waste disposal, prevention and separation. It also introduces the children to the different types of waste, its sources and the adverse impacts to the environment specifically on pollution and even the impacts of global climate change.
“The concepts of waste minimization and 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) are also included in the programme. The children are taught on good practice such as litter prevention, proper use of wheel bins, waste segregation and keeping home, school and public places clean at all times,” explain Ms. Janet Balong, the Public Relations Executive of Trienekens.
“It is essential for young people to understand that cleanliness and good waste management should begin from one self and home,” Ms. Balong elaborates.
Instead of relying on local councils and relevant agencies, the younger generation must learn that as individuals, they also play a pivotal role in ensuring our environment is well-preserved and protected. Through this, our precious natural resources can be conserved and achieve the desired sustainability for future use.
